Three Amazing Minimalist Houses in California

Minimalist architecture is a design philosophy focused on simplicity, functionality, and the idea that less is more. Minimalist spaces often feature raw, unrefined materials such as concrete and wood, with an emphasis on quality over quantity. They avoid unnecessary ornamentation, instead letting the form, structure, and interplay of texture, light and color speak for themselves. This approach often reflects a harmony with the surrounding environment, creating spaces that feel uncluttered, intentional, and timeless.

In this blog, we explore three stunning minimalist houses in California, showcasing the beauty in simplicity.

Japan meets Hollywood

Design by Tadao Ando / Photography by Yoshihiro Makino

Tadao Ando is a renowned Japanese architect celebrated for his minimalist designs and his mastery of concrete. Ando’s work is inspired by Japanese traditions and modernist principles. His buildings often features simple geometric forms, industrial materials, open spaces, and a profound use of nature to create spiritual, almost meditative atmospheres; and this project is no exception.

Ando created this Japanese-inspired home for famous fashion designer Lorenzo Hadar in LA. It combines Japanese and Californian influences to create a peaceful escape from Hollywood. The goal was to avoid sensory overload, giving the house life and soul without any convoluted detailing through embracing light, shape, and serenity.

Celebrating the beauty of Big Sur

Design by  Field Architecture / Photography by Joe Fletcher

On the Big Sur coastline, this residence is all about connecting with the landscape. It features two main buildings split by a little ravine, connected by a floating glass bridge. Stone and timber are the hero materials, while floor to ceiling glass removes the boundaries between indoor and outdoor.

Creating an organic relationship between the built environment and its surroundings is essential in minimalism — underpinned by a philosophy of mindfulness and intentional living. The integration of natural elements also highlights the beauty of imperfection and authenticity, key principles of minimalist aesthetics.

A Venice beach house with a twist

Designed by Matthew Royce / Photography by Sam Frost

Dramatic, elegant, and unfussy; architect Matthew Royce’s house is paradise for eclectic minimalists. Royce let nature take its course with unrefined, sustainable materials and industrial touches — think concrete, glass, exposed raw copper piping — for something totally different from the classic bungalows and ranch-style homes in the area. A mix of antique and modern furniture breathes extra life and personality into each room. Overall it reflects a very unique approach to luxury, one that’s as functional as it is fun.
