What Is Microcement?
Microcement is also known as micro-concrete or micro-topping. It’s comprised of fine-grain cement and adhesive polymers, creating a thin yet durable coating that’s hand-applied onto existing surfaces. It’s highly regarded for its ability to transform anything from concrete to tiles without requiring demolition. It can be used for both interior and exterior applications in various areas — including floors, walls, ceilings, furniture, joinery, wet areas, facades, and more.
SEMCO Surfaces X-Bond was the first microcement on the US market. Its characteristics include:
-
Installed as one continuous coating to create a smooth, seamless surface without visible joints, seams, or grout lines.
-
X-Bond is only 1/8” thick, which allows it to be installed over existing surfaces without significantly impacting the site’s dimensions.
-
Even though it’s thin, X-Bond Microcement is incredibly strong. It can withstand heavy foot traffic and vehicle traffic, making it suitable for both residential and commercial spaces.
X-Bond is also very durable; highly resistant to stains, mould, and grime. You won’t find an easier surface to clean and maintain.
-
Due to its advanced flexibility, X-Bond is less prone to cracking than other cement-based materials (when prepared and installed correctly). This means a guaranteed resistance to de-lamination.
-
Remodel your old floors, walls or joinery without removal. X-Bond forms a chemical bond with almost any hard material, including concrete, wood, tiles, sheeting and even some plastics.
-
SEMCO Surfaces engineers have perfected a waterproofing membrane for microcement. With the addition of Liquid Membrane and SEMCO sealers, X-Bond Microcement can be made fully waterproof for all wet areas including showers, sinks and pools.
When should you consider microcement?
Microcement has seen a significant rise in demand since we first created X-Bond 30 years ago. Its growing popularity stems from both its aesthetic appeal and functional benefits, making it a sought-after alternative to traditional flooring and wall materials like concrete and tiles. Today, architects, interior designers, and homeowners alike choose microcement for its versatility and ability to create seamless surfaces in a wide range of residential and commercial designs.
Some reasons why you would choose microcement in your project:
You want to remodel existing floors, walls, or joinery and you are looking for a product that can be applied directly on-top of the existing materials.
You want a more lightweight and versatile alternative to concrete.
You’re sick of scrubbing the grout in between your bathroom tiles.
You love the clean, minimalist look of a seamless surface.
You want one material that be used for all your internal or external surfacing needs, from walls to floors in the kitchen, bathrooms, and backyard.
