Keep reading to discover why microcement is fast becoming a favorite for exterior design.
What is microcement?
Microcement is made from cement and adhesive polymers, applied manually as a thin layer over nearly any solid surface (often referred to as an overlay). Initially developed to replicate concrete, our X-Bond range has since evolved to offer a variety of textures and colors, making it a customizable option for seamless finishes in any setting.
Can you install microcement outdoors?
Yes, microcement can be installed outdoors. It’s highly durable, weather-resistant, and suitable for foot and/or vehicle traffic. Proper sealing and waterproofing ensures it can be exposed to water, UV rays, and temperature changes without issue. Here’s a break down of the top reasons why clients all over the world are using microcement for external surfacing.
-
Resurfacing worn or damaged surfaces is easy with microcement. Due to the advanced adhesion of added latex polymers, SEMCO X-Bond can be installed right over cracked concrete, tiles, wood, and other materials. Rather than tearing out the existing surface, we use the advanced anti-fracture properties of Liquid Membrane to stabilize it. This means you can skip the demolition during your backyard renovation, cutting down on both expenses and project time.
-
Microcement is one product that does it all, inside and out. Achieve seamless visual harmony with one floor, wall, ceiling, and joinery coating that seamlessly flows from indoor to outdoor spaces.
-
Our X-Bond Microcement is protected with premium-grade SEMCO sealers, guaranteeing a durable finish that withstands all weather conditions including UV, extreme heat and cold, wind, and rain. Unlike concrete, microcement pavements are resistant to temperature changes so they won’t contract or expand in extreme cold or heat.
Combined with our innovative waterproofing membrane, it becomes an ideal choice for swimming pools, ponds, decks, flat rooftops, and balconies.
-
For outdoor flooring, X-Bond Blade has exceptional slip resistance due to its subtly textured finish. This makes it an ideal choice for spaces prone to frequent moisture, such as pool surrounds or open walkways that experience rain. While our other X-Bond Microcement finishes are also floor-friendly, the final decision should be guided by the installer’s expertise and the specific needs of the project. Another option is our ADA Safety Floor.

How to Clean Microcement Outdoors
One of the biggest advantages of microcement is its easy maintenance. With its high resistance to wear and tear, you don’t need to do much.
In external areas, simply hose it periodically with water, particularly in high-traffic areas or when dirt accumulates. You can use low- or high-pressure washing equipment.
Other tips for looking after X-Bond Microcement outdoors include:
Refrain from washing the X-Bond surface during the first seven days after application, even with water. This ensures the sealers have ample time to fully cure.
Steer clear of harsh cleaners with strong or abrasive chemicals.
Although damage is rare, exercise caution when shifting outdoor furniture to avoid potential scratches.
Promptly clean up spills and semi-solids. Certain substances, such as citrus juice, oil, or urine, can stain the surface if not removed quickly.
