Microcement Kitchens
Modernize your kitchen with X-Bond Microcement
If you’re considering a sophisticated, modern, and functional upgrade for your kitchen, microcement offers an ideal solution. Since introducing X-Bond Microcement to the global market three decades ago, we’ve seen it evolve into a highly regarded overlay trusted by homeowners, architects, and contractors.
Popular in both new builds and renovations, microcement has a wide range of applications in the kitchen — including floors, walls, joinery, benchtops, and even rangehoods. Here’s everything you need to know about elevating your kitchen with microcement.
What is microcement?
Microcement is a blend of cement and adhesive polymers, applied by hand as a coating over nearly any solid surface, commonly referred to as an overlay. Products like X-Bond (the world’s first) were initially developed to mimic the raw textural look of concrete, but now offer a variety of finishes and colors allowing for smooth, uninterrupted applications in any setting.
Why specify X-Bond Microcement in your kitchen?
-
Though style isn’t the sole factor, X-Bond effortlessly sets the standard. Meticulously developed by SEMCO engineers to replicate the look of concrete, X-Bond Microcement complements a wide variety of contemporary design styles. Applied as a continuous coating, it delivers a seamless finish with no visible joints or grout lines — making minimalists happy.
The hand-trowelled application process means you can also choose from a range of texture finishes for a unique result. At SEMCO, we offer a variety of colors and can even create a custom shade just for you.

Overlays simplify renovations. These surfacing solutions can be installed directly over existing materials, bypassing demolition to save time and money. Microcement is among the most adaptable of these overlays, applied in a thin layer of just 1/8”. Our engineers have reinforced X-Bond with extra adhesive polymers for the strongest possible chemical bond.
This unique composition allows X-Bond to be applied onto nearly any solid surface, making it an efficient and cost-effective option for kitchen makeovers. From outdated tiles and stone countertops to aging laminate and wooden floors, X-Bond Microcement offers a modern refresh without the need for removal or demolition.

A highly resilient surface, microcement is ideal for busy kitchens. Its excellent resistance to foot traffic ensures it stands up well to daily use, making it perfect for kitchen floors. Microcement is also commonly applied to kitchen walls and cabinetry, as it cleans easily after spills, so you can get creative in the kitchen without worrying about your surfaces.
A good microcement shouldn’t just be hardy — it needs to be flexible, too. X-Bond Microcement takes flexibility to another level, with a super low likelihood of settlement cracks as your home naturally shifts over time, and almost guaranteed resistance to de-lamination.
For those who enjoy outdoor dining, microcement is equally well-suited to external cooking areas, barbecue spaces, and al fresco settings.

Resistant to heat resistance, stains, water (fully waterpoof) and traffic, microcement is suitable for a wide range of applications in the kitchen including:
Kitchen floors
Walls
Ceilings
Island benches
Countertops
Rangehoods
Joinery and kitchen cupboards
Sink basins
Maintenance and Care
If you're looking for a low-maintenance kitchen surface, microcement is an excellent choice. Keeping it in top condition is simple — just clean it occasionally with water and a mild household detergent. Avoid products with harsh chemicals or abrasives, such as acetone solvents above 50% concentration.
Here are some additional cleaning tips to ensure your microcement remains in great shape:
Avoid any washing, even with water, for the first week after microcement application. This waiting period allows the sealers to fully cure.
Always use a cutting board when preparing food on microcement benchtops.
Consult your installer regarding installation for splashbacks behind stoves or cooktops; repeated exposure to heat and oils may erode the sealer over time.
Although SEMCO sealers keep X-Bond resistant to mold and stains, it’s still best to clean up spills and semi-solids immediately.
Period sweeping with a microfibre dust mop/soft broom is recommended. Avoid steam mops.
By following these simple steps, you’ll keep your microcement kitchen looking beautiful for years to come.
